While it is largely forgotten now, Robert Young, who played America’s dad in Father Knows Best on CBS and NBC and then CBS again television from 1954 to 1960, and then returned as America’s family doctor, Marcus Welby, M.D., from 1969 to 1976, also played a struggling author, Cameron “Cam” Garrett Brooks, in a much less iconic role on CBS Television in the one-season Window on Main Street, which consisted of 34 half-hour episodes airing originally on Monday evenings between October 1961 and May 1962. Created by Roswell Rogers, who along with Dane Lussier had been one of the two main screenwriters on Father Knows Best, Window on Main Street was produced by Young and paired opposite The Price Is Right, starring Bill Cullen on NBC, and Chuck Connors in The Rifleman on ABC. Father Knows Best was still on the CBS schedule on Wednesdays in prime time repeats during the 1961-1962 season, so Young was featured in two network comedies the same season. You can watch the Oct. 2, 1961 25-minute black-and-white pilot, “The Return” on YouTube here at: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9XwBY8tLcOA.

The premise has Brooks, who has lived in New York, Connecticut and France, after his wife and child die, returning after years away to write about Millsburg, a hometown that exists largely only in memory. His first visit is to see his boyhood friend, Lloyd Ramsey, editor of the local Millsburg newspaper, in a role played by Ford Rainey, who tries to set him straight on the changed town, which is never placed exactly geographically. Rainey throughout his long television career played as a regular or recurring character, as well as making many guest star appearances on many series. He played the adoptive father of Lee Majors’ Steve Austin in The Six Million Dollar Man, and the foster father of Jaime Sommers in The Bionic Woman. He also appeared in the 1987 miniseries Amerika.

Rainey played a general on CBS’s M*A*S*H, and a judge on both The Waltons and Matlock. He played American presidents on Lost in Space, The Time Tunnel and Voyage to the Bottom of the Sea.
